About this lesson
This opening lesson establishes the United States on the eve of the Civil War: a rapidly expanding republic with deep regional differences, a contested constitutional order, and an unresolved conflict over slavery. Rather than treating the war as sudden or inevitable, the lesson shows how economic growth, westward expansion, political compromise, and moral conflict created a fragile national balance.
Students will learn the major features of Northern, Southern, and Western society before 1860, why slavery stood at the center of sectional tension, and how the federal system made disputes over territory, representation, and political power increasingly dangerous.
