Understanding Cultural Identity Through Art
This lesson introduces cultural identity as something people express, negotiate, and preserve through art. Students will learn how artworks can show belonging, ancestry, migration, religion, language, class, and community memory without reducing identity to a single trait or stereotype.
The lesson focuses on observing how visual choices such as materials, symbols, style, scale, and setting carry cultural meaning. It also prepares learners to distinguish between representation and interpretation, and to ask respectful questions when looking at art connected to communities, traditions, or lived experience.
