About this lesson

This lesson introduces the historical world into which Christianity was born: the Roman Empire, Second Temple Judaism, Greek language and culture, and the everyday pressures faced by the first followers of Jesus.

Students will see that the earliest Christians did not emerge in a vacuum. Their message, worship, leadership, and conflicts were shaped by Jewish Scripture, Roman rule, urban networks, household life, and a pluralistic religious marketplace.
