About this lesson

Classroom management is not about being strict, quiet, or in control every second of the day. It is the set of practices that create the conditions for learning, safety, and mutual respect. In this lesson, Professor Amit Kumar defines classroom management as the intentional design of routines, expectations, relationships, and responses that help students know what to do and feel ready to do it.

We distinguish classroom management from discipline and explain why a well-managed classroom reduces stress for teachers and students alike. The lesson also introduces the core idea of learning climate: the everyday tone of the room, shaped by structure, communication, and consistency. Later lessons will go deeper into routines, behavior supports, engagement strategies, and responding to misbehavior. Here, the goal is to build a clear foundation for what classroom management really means and why it matters.
