About this lesson

This lesson introduces Epicureanism by separating the philosophy of Epicurus from the modern stereotype of indulgence, luxury, and appetite. Students learn that Epicurean pleasure is primarily the stable condition of being free from bodily distress and mental disturbance, not the pursuit of constant stimulation.

The lesson frames Epicureanism as a disciplined art of living calmly: clarifying desires, reducing needless anxiety, valuing friendship, and using reason to choose pleasures wisely. It prepares students for later lessons on desire, fear, death, friendship, and daily practice without trying to settle those topics all at once.
