About this lesson

This opening lesson explains why the history of science is more than a timeline of famous discoveries. It shows science as a human activity shaped by evidence, tools, institutions, culture, argument, and revision.

Students will learn how studying past breakthroughs helps us understand scientific methods, recognize how knowledge changes, and evaluate modern scientific claims with greater care. The lesson sets up the course by introducing recurring themes that will return in later sections: observation, experiment, mathematics, technology, skepticism, controversy, and the social conditions that make discovery possible.
