About this lesson

This opening lesson orients students to Mandarin Chinese as a spoken language, sets expectations for the course, and introduces the practical habits that make beginner progress possible. Students learn what Mandarin is, why pronunciation matters from the start, and how the course will balance speaking, listening, pinyin, tones, grammar, and everyday conversation.

By the end of the lesson, students will understand the role of Putonghua, the purpose of pinyin, the importance of tones, and the basic study routine they should use throughout Mandarin Chinese 101.
