About this lesson

This opening lesson defines meteorology as the science of the atmosphere and weather, then places it within the broader Earth system. Professor Daniel Martin introduces the atmosphere as a thin, dynamic layer of gases that supports life, redistributes heat and moisture, and produces the day-to-day conditions we call weather.

The lesson distinguishes weather from climate, explains why most weather occurs in the lower atmosphere, and outlines the major questions meteorologists investigate: what is happening now, why it is happening, what will happen next, and how weather affects people, ecosystems, transportation, agriculture, and infrastructure.
