About this lesson

Reference checks remain useful because they add work-context evidence that resumes, interviews, assessments, and background screens cannot fully provide. When done well, they help hiring teams understand how a candidate actually worked with managers, peers, customers, pressure, ambiguity, feedback, and accountability.

This lesson explains the modern purpose of reference checks: not to catch candidates out, confirm a gut feeling, or outsource the hiring decision, but to reduce uncertainty in a fair and structured way. It also distinguishes reference checks from verification checks and sets expectations for what a good reference process can and cannot prove.
