About this lesson

Small claims court is a simplified civil court process for resolving lower-dollar disputes without the expense and formality of a regular lawsuit. It is commonly used for unpaid debts, damaged property, broken agreements, poor services, security deposit disputes, and other practical money claims.

This lesson explains what small claims court can and cannot do. You will learn the difference between a small claims case and a criminal, family, eviction, or full civil case; why court limits and local rules matter; and how to decide whether small claims is the right tool before you spend time and money filing or defending a case.
