About this lesson

This opening lesson explains why the brain is worth studying: it is the biological system that makes perception, movement, thought, emotion, memory, identity, and behavior possible. Students learn that neuroscience is not just about anatomy or disease; it is a practical way to understand everyday choices, habits, learning, stress, sleep, relationships, and health.

The lesson also establishes a realistic mindset for the course. The brain is powerful but limited, adaptive but vulnerable, and deeply connected to the body and environment. Rather than treating the brain as a mysterious command center, this lesson frames it as a living network that constantly predicts, regulates, learns, and changes.
