About this lesson

Cholesterol matters because it is both necessary for normal body function and closely tied to the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This lesson explains what cholesterol is, why it travels in lipoproteins, and how excess LDL-containing particles can contribute to plaque buildup inside arteries.

Students will learn why high cholesterol often causes no symptoms, why cholesterol numbers are risk signals rather than a diagnosis by themselves, and how cholesterol fits into the larger picture of heart attack and stroke prevention.
