About this lesson

This lesson introduces the biological and practical foundations of early pregnancy: how conception usually occurs, why pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period rather than the day of conception, and what early physical and emotional changes commonly appear in the first weeks.

Students will learn how estimated due dates are calculated, why early ultrasound can refine dating, and which early symptoms are usually normal versus which symptoms should prompt timely medical care. The goal is to make the first stage of pregnancy feel less mysterious and easier to discuss with a prenatal care professional.
