About this lesson

This lesson introduces the thyroid gland as a small endocrine gland in the lower front of the neck with a large influence on whole-body function. Learners will locate the gland, understand its basic structure, and explain why thyroid hormones affect energy use, temperature, heart rate, digestion, muscles, mood, and brain function.

The lesson also covers the core hormone system: T4, T3, iodine, and the control loop involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and TSH. It stays focused on normal thyroid function so later lessons can build toward hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules, diagnosis, and treatment.
