About this lesson

In this lesson, Professor John Ingram defines middle grade fiction as a publishing category for readers roughly ages 8 to 12, with attention to the difference between the reader’s age, the protagonist’s age, and the emotional scope of the story.

You will learn how middle grade differs from chapter books, young adult fiction, and adult fiction; what kinds of conflicts, voices, themes, and stakes tend to fit the category; and why age-appropriateness does not mean avoiding depth. By the end, you should be able to evaluate whether a story idea truly belongs in middle grade and what expectations a reader, parent, educator, librarian, agent, or editor may bring to it.
