About this lesson

This lesson establishes the basic vocabulary needed for a clear study of atheism, agnosticism, and humanism. It distinguishes belief from knowledge, doubt from denial, and nonbelief from hostility toward religion.

Students learn how terms such as theism, atheism, agnosticism, and humanism function in ordinary conversation and in philosophical discussion. The goal is not to force people into rigid labels, but to make later comparisons more precise and fair.
